POKOTABI / Sasaya
御菓子司 さゝや
At Sasaya, a Japanese confectionery shop in Nerima Ward's Sakaecho, offerings range from Kuro-dora with brown sugar pancake and white bean paste to gyuhi-filled dorayaki and seasonal sweets like minazuki.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Strolling through the shopping street in Ekoda, the standout specialty catching your eye at Sasaya is Kuro-dora, known for its rich brown-sugar aroma. Wrapped inside the moist, pleasantly chewy pancake is smooth white bean paste rather than standard red azuki bean paste. The depth of the brown sugar harmonizes with the mild sweetness of the beans, making it a beloved choice for casual gifts and everyday snacks. Dorayaki choices go beyond Kuro-dora as well, with traditional chestnut-filled versions and varieties layered with soft gyuhi rice cake, offering an enjoyable comparison of textures and fillings.
The storefront display case also reflects the rhythm of the seasons. From delicately sculpted jo-namagashi to early-summer minazuki, Boys' Day kashiwamochi, and Senke confections encasing whole large chestnuts, the shop crafts sweets suited to seasonal holidays and tea gatherings. At times, savory soy-sauce-glazed daifuku or dango appear as well, celebrated for the unpretentious comfort of traditional mochi confections.
Located in Sakaecho, Nerima Ward, the shop opens at 9:00 in the morning, making it convenient for quick shopping stops. Closed on Wednesdays and Sundays, it operates on cash only, so having coins or small bills ready ensures an easy purchase.
